We are providing this EAL qualification (600/5175/9) as a four-day course. It has a knowledge and performance unit which between them covers the competencies for the installation of small-scale solar PV systems. It is specifically for competent electricians who wish to upgrade their skills and be proficient in the installation of small-scale Solar PV systems.
The unit focuses upon the knowledge and occupational competence required to plan and prepare for install (including testing and commissioning) and handover of grid connected solar photovoltaic systems with an electrical output of up to 5 kilowatt peak (kWp) connected to both single and three–phase installations.
At the end of the course, it is intended that candidates will be able to :
- Know the health and safety risks and safe systems of work associated with solar photovoltaic system installation work;
- Know the requirements of the relevant regulations/ standards relating to practical installation, testing and commissioning activities for solar photovoltaic system installation work;
- Identify the key components of a small-scale solar PV system;
- Identify the basic operating principles of small-scale solar PV systems;
- Design, install and commission a small-scale solar PV system;
- Identify the key handover requirements of a small-scale solar PV system.
This qualification will be assessed by an on-line multiple-choice exam and a practical build and commission assessment and successful completion will result in the award of an EAL certificate.

This qualification in solar photovoltaic (SPV) has been developed to enable the building services engineering sector to play its role in meeting the carbon reduction targets set by Government.
