Electrical Underpinning Knowledge and Understanding Test

£140.00

What is this test?

These new tests are for eligible candidates to provide evidence that they possess sufficient underpinning technical knowledge to gain entry onto the Experienced Worker Qualifications.

These are for experienced professionals who typically have at least 10 years’ experience working as an electrician (excluding any time spent in training) but do not yet hold a Level 2 or Level 3 electrical qualification.

This is not a short cut into the EWA – these tests are a Level 3 equivalent. It is not suitable for those who do not have significant experience.

The tests are not Ofqual, CCEA or QW regulated. They have been exclusively developed with The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP). In collaboration with TESP, each test is designed to comprehensively cover the essential knowledge and understanding required for the electrical trade and to provide a pathway for those learners.

Who are the tests for?

The EWA tests are exclusively for seasoned electricians who have worked in the industry for the minimum period specified and have the relevant TESP skills scan having undertaken the full range of work.

These EWA tests are NOT for new entrants to the electrotechnical industry, apprentices or other trainees, or those with limited ‘practising’ experience.

What opportunities for progression are there?

Passing this test will allow you entry onto one of the two Experienced Worker Assessment routes.

Learners must enrol onto an Experienced Worker Route Qualification within a 6-month timeframe of having successfully completed the applicable Electrical Underpinning Knowledge and Understanding Test for their chosen route.

On completion of the Experienced Worker Qualifications and having achieved all required qualifications such as the 18th Edition and Inspection & Testing, delegates can move on to undertake the AM2E Assessment of Competence.

What are the dates of the Test?

The test can be taken during one of the four assessment windows throughout the year.

The first assessment window opened on 21 July 2025.

Subsequent windows will follow during the first three weeks of October 2025, February 2026, and May 2026.

Candidates are given 1 attempt and 2 resits (three in total).

The exam and up to 2 resits must be taken in the same window. If the learner is not successful, they must wait a further 12 months before they will be permitted to re-register and take the test again.

Initial assessment dates within the specified windows are:

  • Monday 29th September
  • Monday 2nd February
  • Tuesday 5th May

If resits are required, these will be arranged with the individual delegates within the attempt window.
